Geocell for Unpaved Roads

Soil is strong in compression but weak in tension,and conversely,geosynthetics are weak in compression but strong in tension.Hence,their combined use,i.e.,geosynthetic reinforced soil,finds extensive application in civil engineering constructions.The functions of geosynthetics,viz.,reinforcement,separation,filtration and drainage,make them versatile in the field of highway engineering.

Geocells are honeycomb shaped geosynthetic cellular confining systems filled with aggregates in which the reinforcement action is derived not only by friction and interlocking,but also by confinement.

The effectiveness of geocell as a reinforcing material has been explored by researchers: 

1)Reinforced sections perform better than unreinforced sections.

2)Geocells are effective as a reinforcing material owed to its confining action.

3)The effectiveness of geocell layer depends on aspect ratio,the type of infill material and the strength of the reinforcing material used for its formation.
